Crusin with Cruz
Ted Cruz's membership at Second Baptist Church in Houston places him in a congregation with several important contacts with political influence. One woman in the church led the state GOP. Dan Patrick is also a member and Lieutenant Governor. Dan is currently waging war on public education seeking to slash funding and give tax money to private Christian schools, like the one at Second Baptist. Second's pastor once stated Enron's Kenneth Lay did nothing wrong. Second was also embroiled in a court case over endorsement of political candidates by the church. Ted stated at Houston Baptist University that the new civil rights issue of this century is getting private schools tax revenues. His church once hosted a civic conference with Pat Robertson claiming from Second's pulpit that the United Nations was working with PBS to get public school children to worship the world dictator. Ted's choice to use Liberty University as a launching pad is an interesting one. The original launching pad for GOP candidates was Bob Jones University. This worked well until someone did some homework on the school after George W. Bush spoke there. Bob Jones's link with the hard racist right was uncovered, which was not that hard to find. Bob Jones's Easter sermon on segregation can still be found on the web. Jones stated that Pentecost proved God made the nations of many different languages. That proved they needed to stay segregated that way. He also subscribed to the idea that Black folks had the Curse of Ham and were intended to be servants to white people. Falwell U. has a fascinating link to racial views. Jerry Falwell praised South African Apartheid, often race bated Jesse Jackson, and once said the Supreme Court ruling stopping segregated schools was a satanic plot. Falwell's newspapers were filled with bazaar conspiracy theories about the Clintons. His video about Bill Clinton, filled with made up sources, was recommended to be shown in church services. When Jerry died his sons had the casket mount used for Ronald Reagan flown in for the service. Jerry thought Reagan was the greatest President ever. Bob Jones U. has gone liberal now and even allows inter racial dating. Liberty has a basketball and football team and I am sure recruiters do not mention some of the ties the founder had with love for the Confederacy. I am wondering if Black students realize the school of government at Liberty is named in honor of Jesse Helms? Helms ran ads in North Carolina warning voters that Blacks would be using the same restrooms as Whites if the wrong people got into office in the state. Ted's friends in the Texas legislature are rushing through a law to ensure Islamic law does not become the law of the lone star state. Ted will get his way on this one, no doubt. Panetti will most likely get his lethal injection and Ted will win that battle also. The Falwell sons, not near as crude as their father, are setting themselves up as kingmakers. It appears that politics trumps religion as far as chapel guests. Secular politicians have been invited to speak at the school. Liberty's favorite politician, Ronald Reagan seldom darkened the door of a church. Baptists like Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton had best now hold their breath until they get an invitation.
